The Safe and Confident Living Program in Rockhampton is funded by the Department of Communities and is part of Lifeline Brisbane's Older Person's Programs. The main focus of the program is to reduce the fear of crime among older people in the community. To support this program current statistics are provided. Crime is an important issue for older people. Older people who are fearful of crime often lead restricted lifestyles. However, the reported level of fear of crime among older people is often out of proportion to the actual risk of becoming a victim of crime.
The key messages are:
· Not all types of crime are increasing
· Older people are less frequently the victims of crime than other age groups
· Older people do not necessarily suffer more physical, financial or emotional impact than other victims of crime. Regardless of age victims are susceptible to great distress.
· Rates of crime vary in different regions throughout Queensland and also within regions
· Individuals and groups are not powerless. Preventative action can be taken in relation to the rate of crime in an area; and
· Information and assistance with crime prevention is available from a number of sources.
The Safe and Confident Living Program also focuses on reducing social isolation, by linking older people with other networks and social groups within the community. The program involves a range of activities designed to increase the confidence and social participation of vulnerable seniors. These include:
· Referring and linking seniors to services and supports available within their local community
· Providing accurate information on crime and crime prevention strategies.
· Social and personal development activities that enhance life-skills, participation and confidence in community living, community education and network development
The program promotes:
· A positive image of older people and links culturally with indigenous and ethnic groups, networking with other agencies in order to improve services.
· Ensures older people are valued for their integrity while providing a service that is respectful in its concern for the crime and safety issues. Examples of these are connecting with a safe neighbour, police and Neighbourhood watch, support from Qld Fire & Rescue about safety in the home and fall prevention.
· Community education is vital when it comes to checking out authenticity of door to door sales persons, such as itinerants wanting to paint the roof. For any major maintenance we recommend CQ Home Assist which is funded by the Department of Housing and auspiced by the Rockhampton City Council.
· The program also provides opportunities to encourage creative and innovative responses to local safety needs and self esteem issues. A Safe and Confident Living Social Group encourages participation by organising and coordinating activities and events to prevent social isolation of older people.
