Landmark research project shines light on elderly
UnitingCare Community’s new Elder Abuse research project is one of the first Australian research forays into the abuse and neglect of the elderly.
Elder abuse is recognised worldwide as a significant and growing social problem.
UnitingCare Community and Blue Care are two Queensland-based organsations involved in the research project.
UnitingCare Community’s Elder Abuse Prevention Unit Coordinator Les Jackson said the research project has the capacity to significantly enhance our understanding of the problem.
“The results from this survey will help increase understanding of the size of the elder abuse problem, who is being abused, the types of abuse and neglect being experienced by older victims, and, related to this, the community’s actual ability to recognise elder abuse when it is happening,” Mr Jackson said.
“Our longer term goal is to ensure that there will be an increased awareness about elder abuse and
supports for older people, their families and carers in order to assist with the prevention of elder abuse and neglect,” he said.
The Elder Abuse Prevention Unit promotes the right of older people to live free from abuse, and responds to abuse that occurs within a relationship of trust.
UnitingCare Community is seeking community participation in an online questionnaire. Participation is voluntary and responses are confidential.
“By completing the questionnaire you will be enhancing current knowledge about the welfare of older people in Australia,” Mr Jackson said.
