Getting help & calling the Helpline

If you or anyone you know are currently feeling threatened or unsafe it is best to call 000. The police can remove an abusive person from a situation or support someone to reach safety. If the situation is non-urgent, the Elder Abuse Helpline is a first port-of-call for support, referral and information. We provide free assistance to anyone who experiences, witnesses or suspects the abuse of an older person by someone they know and trust. 

All calls to our Helpline are confidential and you are welcome to remain anonymous; we don't record calls or keep case notes. The Helpline is older person focussed, respectful, non-judgemental and offers you the time to talk things over at your own pace. 

Elder Abuse is a complex issue and our role is to work with you on what the best options may be for you and your family. Sometimes, contact with a number of other agencies may be needed.

You can call our Helpline on 1300 651 192 or 1800 Elder Help (1800 353 374). The Telephone Interpreter Service is available for non-English speaking callers. The helpline operates 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday and voice messages can be left outside these hours.

What we don't do

  • We are not a crisis line
  • We are not a reporting agency
  • We do not undertake case work
  • We don't investigate cases of elder abuse

However, we may be able to refer you to agencies who do all of those things.

What if the person is interstate?

Of course, we are always able to talk to you, despite where you or others may be. However, if a person or issue you are concerned about crosses state/ territory borders, it may be best (and at times necessary) to make contact with services interstate. This is because states and territories have different laws, for example, when creating a protection order or in guardianship and administration matters. Workers more local the situation might have better insight into the options, services and law in that state or territory.

For this reason, most state/territory helplines have a landline number so that interstate callers can still make contact. Ours is (07) 3867 2525.
